The Most Important Skincare Tips for Your Forties, Fifties, and Sixties

It will surprise almost no one that skin’s needs change over time. Very few of us are still using the skincare that served us just fine in our teens. (By the way, if you’re looking for skincare tips for the teenage years, we’ve got that coming too!)

As our forties roll around, hormonal changes begin to complicate matters. The following tips are organized by decade, but as you read, pay more attention to the biological stages than to the years. Everyone ages differently, and everyone comes to perimenopause and menopause a little differently too. So here, age is just a number. The life stage matters more.

The most important skincare tips in your forties (Perimenopause)

If you’ve never dealt with hormonal acne, or skin issues caused by hormonal birth control, you may not realize how much of an effect your hormones can have on your skin. For some of us, perimenopause is our first introduction to the interplay between estrogen and our skin’s health and appearance. Estrogen levels are tied to collagen content, moisture production, and moisture retention in the skin.

We’re not here to advise any medical interventions, beyond consulting with your physician if you suspect you’re experiencing menopausal symptoms. What we are here to advise is to listen to your skin.

To encourage more collagen production and skin turnover without exacerbating dryness or sensitivity issues, consider a copper peptide product. If your skin feels more dehydrated than it used to, introducing an extra humectant step into your routine, like a hyaluronic acid serum, will help alleviate this issue. For a weaker skin barrier, consider a barrier-strengthening moisturizer that contains ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids.

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream contains these ingredients in ratios scientifically backed to penetrate and strengthen skin barrier function.

The most important skincare tips in your fifties and sixties (Menopause and Post Menopause)

As you get deeper into full-blown menopause and beyond, the drop in estrogen will show more clearly in your skin. Continuing to listen to your skin and use products that replenish moisture and boost collagen production will still help. However, there are now a few topical products formulated specifically for estrogen-deficient skin. It may be worth checking some out.

The key ingredient to look for is methyl estradiolpropanoate. This synthetic ester mimics estrogen’s effects in skin, but metabolizes into a safe, inactive compound. So far, studies have supported its safety and efficacy, making it an exciting ingredient in modern skincare. Emepelle’s serum and night cream are among the few products containing methyl estradiolpropanoate to target estrogen-deficient skin.
